Since there are many tehnical differences between the 8.1 version and the 8.0/7.5 version, I've decided to make completely separate apps. The 8.0 version is now hidden from the store, which means searching for it will not yeld any results. Instead, use the links bellow.
Windows Phone 8.1 version: Named Media Center -> download this if you are using the latest version of windows phone. This is the app that gets continued support and updates. use this INSTEAD of the one presented latter in this thread if you are running on windows phone 8.1. How do you know if you run windows phone 8.1? simply follow the download link: if you are running 8.1 you will be able to download it!

KNOWN ISSUES FOR 8.1 RELEASE
The annoying sound at the end of a track is caused by an API bug. Xbox music does the same.
I've reported the bug to microsoft.
Please remember this is still a test build on a beta operating system!
Please vote here to make Microsoft more aware of this bug

I am also looking for someone to port the desktop client to linux/mac
The desktop client is written in C# 5. The step over to c/c++ is not hard, but i need someone with knowledge about the native components of linux/mac
This is a pre-release version, which is why you will need the link to download it. Please report any bugs you come across.
There are two different versions of the app, one for WP7 and one for WP8.
They are both available from the same marketplace entry. Thus WP8 features are *supported* (some of them).
Features:
2 playback modes:
Integration with the phone media library.(media library mode)
1) can play songs and crated playlists
2) can not create playlists, but it will see the playlists created by the default music app.
3) does not support ogg and flac files
Dedicated media player(local storage mode)
1) plays songs stored in app's storage or on SD cards (for wp8 devices)
2) can create playlists and manipulate playback queue
3) can not comunicate with the phone media library, that is, you must replace the built-in app with this one
3)plays ogg and flac files.
If you choose to use the full features of this player, you will have to replace the built-in one completely!
You have 3 ways of getting files in app's storage
1) skydrive upload to a folder called "media player"(create it), then you sign in from the app and download the contents of the folder
2) "wireless transfers" using the desktop app (yes, there is a desktop client for support). Wireless transfers work when the phone is connected via USB with the computer as well.
3)If you have an SD card, you can use the desktop client to send files to a folder called "media player"-> create it. DO NOT transfer files manually, it will not work properly
Other features:
Fastforward/rewind (for media library mode hold the next/pervious buttons in the sound bar)
tiles for quick playback control.
pin to start pretty much any song/playlist.
Dock mode for cars (prevents screen from timing out), basic gesture support for playback manipulation.
The desktop client will ask for admin privileges: give them to it. It won't harm your computer. It needs so it can transfer stuff via ports.
More features will be coming soon with each major iteration of the application such as
1)integration with various cloud music services
2)extension to video player
3)download files from the internet.
and many other ideas.
If you have more ideas, please PM or post here.
KNOWN ISSUES I CAN NOT HELP WITH
WP7: the CPU can not handle the stress of playing flac and ogg files while doing other things and music will have stutter when you do demanding things with the CPU.
WP8 shouldn't have this problem, if you do, know there is nothing i can do about that, as some apps are simply not optimized properly.
When this stuttering occurs: usually during spalshscreens.
This happens because ogg and flac files are decoded via "software" extensions of the OS and not native code. When the phone supports ogg and flac properly, the stuttering should stop.
KNOWN ISSUES UNDER REVIEW
Files transferred via Wireless Transfers may not be transferred correctly, even if the process reports no problem. If that happens, please resubmit. the files.
Limitations i had to get around:
Read-only access of phone media library, inability to read the files from background without using the built-in media player
Phone is unable to read mp3, mp4, 3GP and other supported file formats from SD cards(thus we change the extensions by adding a d at the and).
Rendering music from custom made music player requires streams on the file (thus it can not read the media library file streams, and forced either SD or local cache for songs).
Inability to get files in local cache from outside the application (thus skydrive downloads).
Skydrive downloads are inconvenient however, thus the desktop client to help with transfers.
OS provide basic access to SD card files, extensions much be changed for system supported formats, inability to read tags, thus the need for a specific naming convention for these files, which is also done by the desktop client.
What does the desktop client do?
Eases transfer of files in local app cache.
Eases transfer of files in proper naming convention to SD card.
TROUBLESHOOTING
Those who are experiencing issues when playing music files in local storage mode, like tracks suddenly stopping or not jumping to the next track (properly or not at all), please re-transfer your music files.
